While you know you are supposed to go to the dentist at least a few times a year, many people still avoid the dentist until there is a serious problem. It is important to note that many teeth issues and health issues can be prevented at a top dental clinic. If you are hesitant because you do not know what to expect during a dental checkup, rest assured it is far less frightening than what might be in your head.
The Environment
The overwhelming majority of dentist offices are a calming, sterile and welcoming environment. You can expect to wait in a brightly lit waiting room with magazines, comfortable chairs, little noise and quite possibly wifi. The actual dental examination room in the dental clinic will provide the same environment. The major difference will be that the chair you sit in reclines and it is significantly more comfortable than a medical doctor’s office. Do not worry about the sounds of the machines, they are drastically less audible than in the past, and the most painful part is the anticipation
Basic Cleaning
A basic cleaning is designed for an extensive oral examination and preventative dental care. The dental hygienist will perform the basic cleaning. This will include a highly thorough flossing and mouth cleaning. They will spray your teeth down with a highly potent waterpik to remove all debris that came loose during the cleaning process. The hygienist will also check your gums for any sensitivities and possible gum disease. Once this basic cleaning process has been completed, the hygienist will chat with the doctor, and then the doctor will examine your entire mouth for any potential issues.
The Doctor Screening
The doctor will carefully examine your mouth for any potential issues during the basic cleaning. It is possible that you have cavities, tooth decay, plaque buildup, gum disease or any number of other dental issues that could cause you harm or discomfort. It is also possible that your mouth is in perfectly healthy shape. The doctor will also provide you with a cancer screening by examining your entire mouth, tongue, neck and jaw for any possible cancer-related concerns. At this time, the doctor will either recommend that you return for another appointment to repair damage, treat you with on-the-spot treatments for more minor concerns or send you on your way with a clean bill of health.
A healthy mouth is essential for good health and a great quality of life. It may seem like a dental checkup is something to fear; however, it is a simple process that will help to prevent bigger dental issues in the future. Your teeth are the gateway to your health, and basic checkups will save you money on dental bills and doctor visits in the future.
