Do you have a tooth that has become badly infected? How about a tooth that has already been extracted, or a failed root canal that needs to be extracted? Dental implants are one of the most popular options when you do have a missing tooth that needs to be replaced. Generally patients will undergo treatment in three phases, tooth extraction, bone grafting and implant placement, and tooth placement. Depending upon the amount of bone density, and dental needs of the patient, some people can have a tooth extraction and dental implant in the same visit.
Visit # 1 – Tooth Extraction
The first appointment will focus on removal of the infected tooth. We will need to surgically remove this tooth, and can possibly place the dental implant at the same time if the jawbone is strong enough. Some patients could have soft bone tissue, and bone grafting is required in order to have a tooth implant be successful. Contact our office to set up a consultation to have X-rays of the area, and to allow Dr. Leavitt to get a look at your options.
Visit # 2 – Bone Grafting and Dental Implant
If everything is healthy following the tooth extraction, we can place the dental implant. We will surgically place the implant into the jawbone, where it will need time to heal and bond with the the jawbone. The dental implant will need to heal during a process called osseointegration. The healing time can take several months for some patients.
Visit # 3 – Dental Implant Placement
Once the dental implant has fully bonded with the jawbone, we can then place the false tooth on top of the dental implant. Placement of the artificial tooth is relatively easy as we will need to uncover the implant and abutment and attach the crown to it. The crown will blend in with your teeth, leaving you with a perfected smile once again.
Dental implants have a high success rate, 98%, which is why we do recommend them for many of our patients dealing with severe dental problems. If you are experiencing failed root canals, abscess teeth, or other issues, contact Leavitt Family and Cosmetic Dentistry today!
